Pico Humboldt
At 4,940 meters above sea level, Pico Humboldt one of the highest mountains in Venezuela. It's in the Venezuelan Andes, in the Sierra Nevada de Merida (Mérida State). The Sierra Nevada National Park protects the mountain, its sister peak Pico Bonpland, and the adjacent páramos. Alexander von Humboldt, a German adventurer and naturalist, is honored with the mountain's name.
Previously, the peak was surrounded by glaciers, including the two largest of the country's four glaciers (the other two lesser glaciers were on Pico Bolvar). Since the 1970s, the glaciers atop Humboldt Peak (and most tropical glaciers) have been rapidly disappearing. By 2009, all but one glacier remained, the Humboldt Glacier. The remnant glacier, which occupies 0.1 km2 and is expected to melt completely within a decade, is expected to disappear.
