Venezuela is bordered by the Caribbean Sea, Brazil, Colombia, and Guyana in South America. There are four geographical regions in the country. The Maracaibo ... read more...

  1. Pico Bolvar ranked first among the highest mountains in Venezuela, with a summit elevation of 16,342 feet above sea level. Although the Mérida Cable Car, the world's highest cable car, travels close, climbing is the only means to reach the summit of Pico Bolvar. Enrique Bourgoin, H. Molina, and Domingo Pea made the first successful ascent to the summit in 1935.

Researchers have measured this mountain on various occasions, and it was once estimated to be 16,410 feet high. The most recent and most precise of these observations took place in 2002. This snow-covered mountain is home to three glaciers that have been building for over 12,000 years. Currently, these glaciers only cover about 7.48 hectares of land.

Location: on the mountain previously called La Columna, next to El León and El Toro

  2. At 4,940 meters above sea level, Pico Humboldt one of the highest mountains in Venezuela. It's in the Venezuelan Andes, in the Sierra Nevada de Merida (Mérida State). The Sierra Nevada National Park protects the mountain, its sister peak Pico Bonpland, and the adjacent páramos. Alexander von Humboldt, a German adventurer and naturalist, is honored with the mountain's name.

Previously, the peak was surrounded by glaciers, including the two largest of the country's four glaciers (the other two lesser glaciers were on Pico Bolvar). Since the 1970s, the glaciers atop Humboldt Peak (and most tropical glaciers) have been rapidly disappearing. By 2009, all but one glacier remained, the Humboldt Glacier. The remnant glacier, which occupies 0.1 km2 and is expected to melt completely within a decade, is expected to disappear.

  3. Pico La Concha ranked third among the highest mountains in Venezuela, standing at 16,148 feet (about 4,922 metres). Pico La Concha is located in the Andes of Venezuela. It is part of the same mountain range as the summits described above. The first successful ascent of this mountain occurred in 1939. Pico La Garza was the name given to the summit since it was once home to the La Garza glacier. Unfortunately, the last time that glacier was seen was in 1972.

The PR-A 135 track from Istán to Pico de la Concha leads to Sierra Blanca's highest mountain, Pico de la Concha, which is part of the Sierra de las Nieves Natural Park.

The mountains of Sierra Nevada, Morocco, and a beautiful panoramic view of the Concepción Reservoir can be seen from the summit of La Concha.

  4. Pico Bonpland, at 4,883 meters above sea level, is one of the highest mountains in Venezuela. It's in the Venezuelan Andes, in the Sierra Nevada de Merida (Mérida State). The Sierra Nevada National Park protects the mountain, as well as its sister peak, Pico Humboldt, and the adjacent páramos. The peak is named for Aimé Bonpland, despite the fact that he never visited the Venezuelan Andes.

The glaciers in the Bonpland are the product of the Pleistocene Merida glaciation. They had all vanished by 2011.

The park is busiest during the dry or summer months. Although it is cooler, the weather is better. This season lasts approximately from December to April. Winter lasts from late June until late September, with a lot more snow. Although the weather is not ideal, the mountains are far more gorgeous and interesting. Late September is the ideal time of year to go climbing because the weather is improving and there is still enough of snow.
