Playa del Papagayo

Costa Rica's northern coast is bounded by the Gulf of Papagay. The waters of the Papagayo Gulf (Golfo de Papagayo) are suitable for divers of all levels of experience. Among the volcanic rock islets and submarine pinnacles off this shore, there is a plethora of fish activity and rich aquatic life. Divers can participate in a variety of activities such as snorkeling, liveaboard diving, wreck diving, and cave diving at the numerous dive sites.

The Catalina Islands (Islas Catalinas) are the region's most well-known attraction, and are regarded one of Costa Rica's most beautiful dive sites. Divers are frequently surrounded by vast schools of colorful fish, as well as a plethora of manta rays and stingrays.

Divers can also visit Playa Flamingo, Playa Hermosa, Playa Ocotal, and Playa Panamá, where they can see green jacks, damselfish, butterflyfish, spotted rose snappers, grunts, angelfish, triggerfish, parrotfish, turtles, whitetip sharks, eagle rays and stingrays, lobsters, and eels, among other corals and marine life.

The most developed and populous area in the Papagayo region is Playa del Coco, which is known for its massive shark populations, which can be found in schools of 300 or more. The red-lipped batfish is only found off the coast of Playa del Coco, Punta Argentina, Punta Gorda, Los Sombreros, Meros, The Point, Catalina Islands, and Bat Islands are among the dive spots that divers will appreciate.
