Brunei's first polytechnic is Politeknik Brunei. His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam approved the establishment of Politeknik Brunei in a Titah delivered during the Teacher's Day celebration on 18 October 2008, in order to accelerate the country's human resources development, as emphasized by the National Development Plan (NDP) and Brunei Vision 2035. This shift in technical education came as a result of the changing local and global economic landscape, which had a direct impact on the country's current and future skilled worker needs.

Politeknik Brunei (PB)
offers courses and programs in a variety of fields that lead to officially recognized higher education degrees. This Bruneian higher-education school, which is eight years old, has a selective admission criteria based on entrance exams and students' previous academic records and ratings. This Bruneian higher education institution has a 60-70 percent admission rate, making it a somewhat selective university. Applicants from all over the world are welcome to apply. Students can use PB's library, sports facilities, and administrative services, among other academic and non-academic facilities and services.

Politeknik Brunei first opened its doors in January 2012, offering nine two-year Advanced Diploma programs in business, information technology, science, and engineering. Politeknik Brunei revamped its former Advanced Diploma programs and began offering its new 3-year Level 5 Diploma programs to students with a minimum of 5 GCE 'O' Level credits (based on relevant subjects) as well as those with Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) qualifications three years later, in July 2015. The new Level 5 Diploma is the same as the Higher National Diploma (HND). Since then, the four schools that make up Politeknik Brunei – the School of Business, the School of Information and Communication Technology, the School of Science and Engineering, and the School of Health Sciences – have offered a total of twenty-two (22) academic Diploma programs.
