Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali
Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali (Sultan Sharif Ali Islamic University) was established in 2007 as a non-profit public higher-education school in the small city of Gadong (population range of 50,000-249,999 people), Brunei-Muara. Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali (UNISSA) is a small (enrollment range: 1,000-1,999 students) coeducational Bruneian higher education institution formally affiliated with the Islamic religion. It is officially recognized by the Kementerian Pendidikan, Negara Brunei Darussalam (Ministry of Education of Brunei Darussalam).
His Majesty Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah first addressed the idea of establishing a second university in Brunei in his Titah delivered at the University of Brunei Darussalam's 16th convocation in 2004 and again in 2005 at the UBD's 17th convocation, where His Majesty stated that the second university would be an Islamic university. The new university's overall goal is to become a regional center for the spread of Islam. The institution was named after the third Sultan of Brunei, Barkat Ali ibnu Sharif Ajlan ibnu Sharif Rumaithah, who was a descendent of Islamic prophet Muhammad and was appointed as the third Sultan of Brunei after marrying the previous sultan's daughter.
Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali was founded on 11 Zulhijjah 1427AH (1 January 2007). In August 2007, UNISSA welcomed its first group of students. There were 125 undergraduates and 27 graduate students accepted. UNISSA absorbed academic and non-academic employees as well as students from the Sultan Haji Omar Ali Saifuddien Institute of Islamic Studies (IPI SHOAS), which had previously been a part of UBD, when it was established. UNISSA did not have its own premises at the time and had to rely on IPI SHOAS as a base. To enable greater area for expansion and facilities, the institution moved to a temporary site in Gadong in February 2009, at the former Pengiran Anak Puteri Rashidah College of Nursing.
UNISSA offers courses and programs that lead to officially recognized higher education degrees such as pre-bachelor degrees (i.e. certificates, diplomas, associate or foundation degrees), bachelor degrees, master degrees, and doctorate degrees in a variety of fields. This Bruneian higher-education school, which has been around for 13 years, has a selective admission policy based on students' previous academic records and grades. With an acceptance rate of 80-90 percent, this Bruneian higher education school is one of the least selective in the country. Students from all around the world are welcome to apply for admission. Students can take advantage of UNISSA's academic and non-academic facilities and services, which include a library, lodging, sports facilities, financial aid and/or scholarships, study abroad and exchange programs, and administrative services.
