Universiti Brunei Darussalam (University of Brunei Darussalam) was founded in 1985 as a non-profit public higher-education institution in the rural environment of Gadong (population range of 50,000-249,999 residents), Brunei-Muara. Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) is a modest (enrollment range: 2,000-2,999 students) coeducational Bruneian higher education institution that is officially recognized by the Kementerian Pendidikan, Negara Brunei Darussalam (Ministry of Education of Brunei Darussalam). It was founded in 1985 and has since grown to become the country's largest university in terms of student enrollment and curriculum provided.

This is one of the best universities in Brunei. Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB) is a very small (enrollment range: 1,000-1,999 students) coeducational Bruneian higher education institution that is officially recognized by the Kementerian Pendidikan, Negara Brunei Darussalam (Ministry of Education of Brunei Darussalam).


    In November 1980, the Director of Education presented the government with a proposal to establish Institut Teknologi Brunei. He proposed that such an institution be established to expand Brunei Darussalam's technical education offerings. The plan was accepted by the government a little less than two years later, in February 1982. Pusat Latihan Teknikal Brunei was designed and expanded as an embryo for the institute because the actual establishment of the institute was expected to take some time. Leeds Polytechnic aided the institute in the creation of its curriculum, secondment of employees, procurement of books and equipment, and employment of contract staff in the United Kingdom toward the end of its inception in October 1985. The institute received its first pupils less than five months later.


    There are approximately 2,303 students and 140 academic members at UTB. It has graduated 4,483 HND students and 128 bachelor's degree students.     Politeknik Brunei first opened its doors in January 2012, offering nine two-year Advanced Diploma programs in business, information technology, science, and engineering. Politeknik Brunei revamped its former Advanced Diploma programs and began offering its new 3-year Level 5 Diploma programs to students with a minimum of 5 GCE 'O' Level credits (based on relevant subjects) as well as those with Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) qualifications three years later, in July 2015. The new Level 5 Diploma is the same as the Higher National Diploma (HND). Since then, the four schools that make up Politeknik Brunei – the School of Business, the School of Information and Communication Technology, the School of Science and Engineering, and the School of Health Sciences – have offered a total of twenty-two (22) academic Diploma programs.

Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali (Sultan Sharif Ali Islamic University) was established in 2007 as a non-profit public higher-education school in the small city of Gadong (population range of 50,000-249,999 people), Brunei-Muara. Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali (UNISSA) is a small (enrollment range: 1,000-1,999 students) coeducational Bruneian higher education institution formally affiliated with the Islamic religion. It is officially recognized by the Kementerian Pendidikan, Negara Brunei Darussalam (Ministry of Education of Brunei Darussalam).


    His Majesty Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah first addressed the idea of establishing a second university in Brunei in his Titah delivered at the University of Brunei Darussalam's 16th convocation in 2004 and again in 2005 at the UBD's 17th convocation, where His Majesty stated that the second university would be an Islamic university. The new university's overall goal is to become a regional center for the spread of Islam. The institution was named after the third Sultan of Brunei, Barkat Ali ibnu Sharif Ajlan ibnu Sharif Rumaithah, who was a descendent of Islamic prophet Muhammad and was appointed as the third Sultan of Brunei after marrying the previous sultan's daughter.

UNISSA absorbed academic and non-academic employees as well as students from the Sultan Haji Omar Ali Saifuddien Institute of Islamic Studies (IPI SHOAS), which had previously been a part of UBD, when it was established. UNISSA did not have its own premises at the time and had to rely on IPI SHOAS as a base. To enable greater area for expansion and facilities, the institution moved to a temporary site in Gadong in February 2009, at the former Pengiran Anak Puteri Rashidah College of Nursing.

Brunei Technical Education Institute was founded in It is a higher education institution in the small city of Bandar Seri Begawan (population range of 250,000-499,999 inhabitants), Brunei-Muara, which was founded in 1969. Institute of Brunei Technical Education (IBTE) is a coeducational higher education institution that was officially authorized by Brunei Darussalam's Ministry of Education. The Institute of Brunei Technical Education (IBTE) provides courses and programs that lead to officially recognized higher education degrees, such as bachelor's degrees, in a variety of fields. The Institute of Business and Technology Education (IBTE) was founded on May 27, 2014, after the Department of Technical Education and seven technical and vocational institutions around the country merged.


    Since 2016, IBTE has rebuilt its seven schools into two clusters: IBTE Central and IBTE Satellite. The schools' titles have also been changed to better represent their merging under one umbrella institution, with the terms 'IBTE' and 'Campus' included in the new names.
