Arnold Jacob "Red" Auerbach (September 20, 1917 – October 28, 2006) was a basketball coach and executive in the United States. He spent time as a head coach in the NBA, most notably with the Boston Celtics. He also coached the Washington Capitals and the Tri-Cities Blackhawks. Auerbach set NBA records as a coach, with 938 wins and nine championships. He served as president and front office executive of the Celtics until his death in 1966, after retiring as a coach. He won seven more NBA titles as the Celtics' general manager and team president, for a total of 16 in 29 years, making him one of the most successful team administrators in the history of North American professional sports.
Auerbach is regarded as a modern basketball pioneer, reinventing the game as a team sport dominated by defense and creating the fast break as a devastating offensive tool. Many players who went on to be inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame were mentored by him.
