Roche has also developed a number of HIV tests and antiretroviral medications. In 1992, it purchased the patents for the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) method. The United States FDA approved Hoffman-LaRoche's HIV protease inhibitor saquinavir in 1995, ushering in the era of highly active anti-retroviral therapy (HAART). Within two years of its approval (and four months later of ritonavir), annual AIDS fatalities in the United States plummeted from over 50,000 to around 18,000 within two years.
The FDA approved Roche Diagnostics' high-volume Sars-CoV-2 diagnostic test in March 2020, allowing it to analyze 1,400–8,800 samples within 24 hours using the company's proprietary cobas 6800–8,800 molecular testing technology. Roche Diagnostics is a company that makes diagnostic equipment and reagents for use in research and medical diagnosis. Roche Applied Science, Roche Professional Diagnostics, Roche Diabetes Care, Roche Molecular Diagnostics, and Roche Tissue Diagnostics are the company's five major business sectors (Ventana).
