Sanctuary Hotel New York
At first glance, Sanctuary Hotel could be mistaken for a nice, private residence (it isn't marked). But once you see the Tender Steak & Sushi restaurant sign outside, you'll know you're in the right place. Enter through a massive wooden door flanked by white pillars and turn right to find the concierge. With cozy fireplaces, soft (non-tacky!) music, and gray, gold, and red accents, the lobby has a warm-yet-modern ambiance.
The rooms are spacious and luxurious, with floor-to-ceiling leather headboards, travel-size bath products, and small welcome amenities like a shower cap and a powerful blow-dryer. There's free Wi-Fi, and the rain-style shower is incredible. However, Sanctuary maintains a light sense of humour, as evidenced by the amusing artwork in your bathroom.
After you've checked in, go to the hotel's restaurant, Tender Steak & Sushi. For the pre-theater crowd, it offers a pre-fixe menu ($45). If you're looking for a regular dinner, the Croquette roll ($22) with tuna and spicy aioli, or The Blessing roll ($19) with lobster, seared salmon, and truffle honey miso, are not to be missed. After your meal, make your way to the aptly named Haven rooftop (open-air during the warmer months, nicely sealed up after fall) for a cocktail with city views (around $14). There is a small view of Times Square, but the rooftop is otherwise well-insulated from the craziness, making this a great spot for those looking for a fun, non-touristy bar in the area.
