Sayeret Matkal, Israel
Sayeret Matkal's official name is General Staff Reconnaissance Unit 269 (GSRU 269 for short). It is the IDF's primary special operations unit (Israel Defense Force). It reports directly to the Directorate of Military Intelligence of the IDF's Special Operations Branch and is comparable to the 1st SFOD-D (Delta Force) of the American Army. Many scholars claim that this Sayeret Matkal unit is based on the British Army's Special Air Service (SAS).
This special force from Israel is equipped to combat terrorism. This force's members are recognized for having exceptional physical and mental qualities. Aspiring recruits undergo rigorous training activities at the Gibbush selection camp while being closely observed by medical professionals and psychologists.
They have been crucial in easing Israel's anxiety in the wake of the Palestinian terrorist assaults. One of the well-known instances showcasing Sayeret Matkal's efforts was the 2003 rescue of Israeli taxi driver Eliyahu Gurel, who had been kidnapped while driving four Palestinians to Jerusalem. He was trapped in a 10-meter-deep trench at an abandoned factory in a Ramallah neighborhood when the team discovered him and saved him.
