Schlumberger was founded on the premise that if an electric field could be produced under the surface, voltage measurements at the surface could be mapped to show subsurface structure. In 1912, using extremely primitive technology, the first map of equipotential curves was recorded after two years of lab and field research. The results validated the approach while showing subterranean characteristics including bed borders and formation layer dip directions. This was critical because the approach gave additional data that might be valuable in detecting subsurface structures that form traps for minerals like oil and gas.
