Schule Schloss Salem
Schule Schloss Salem, the School of Salem Castle, is a boarding school with campuses in Salem and Überlingen in Southern Germany. It offers the German Abitur and the International Baccalaureate (IB). The school goes beyond academics and emphasizes social education with service-oriented programs like the fire brigade and a Technical Support Organization (THW).
In the initial years, instruction is in German. Starting from Year 8, Salem becomes fully bilingual, offering a dual curriculum. Students can choose to continue in the German system (Abitur) or join the international classes and the IB Diploma Programme, where the primary language of instruction is English. While most students are of German background, there's a significant number of international students from various countries.
All upper-year students must engage in community service at least one afternoon per week. Additionally, they must participate in regular sports and outdoor activities. The school strongly encourages participation in the arts. Unlike traditional boarding schools, Salem places everyday responsibilities in the hands of students, guided by staff. Many activities are led by students elected by their peers.
Schule Schloss Salem has a unique character where students of all ages experience aspects that contribute to a lasting and thriving community life. The focus is on providing a top-notch education beyond memorization, emphasizing understanding facts and their interrelationships through active involvement and empirical learning.
