Surf Scoter
The Surf Scoter is an unusual duck that can be found in the coastal waters of the Pacific and Atlantic during winter. North America is the sea duck's native habitat. The male sea duck's distinctive head pattern has earned it the moniker "skunk-headed coot". The velvety black plumage, white patches on the forehead and back of the neck, and vibrant bills of the male surf scoters serve as indicators of their gender. The females' bills are greenish-black, and their bodies are a lighter shade of black with white patches on the cheeks.
When feeding, mollusks make up the majority of their diet. They also eat small fish, echinoderms, crustaceans, aquatic insects, and aquatic insects. The surf scoter frequents coastal areas like harbors and bays. The sea ducks spend the summer on little freshwater bodies in tundra habitats.
