The Dark Knight
Christopher Nolan directed, produced, and co-wrote The Dark Knight, a superhero film released in 2008. The film is the second episode of Nolan's The Dark Knight Trilogy and a sequel to 2005's Batman Begins and is based on the DC Comics character Batman. In the film, Bruce Wayne / Batman (Bale), Police Lieutenant James Gordon (Oldman), and District Attorney Harvey Dent (Eckhart) form an alliance to combat organized crime in Gotham City, but they are threatened by the Joker (Ledger), an anarchistic mastermind who seeks to undermine Batman's power and throw the city into chaos.
The film received critical acclaim for its screenplay, visual style, musical score, stunts, mature themes, performances (particularly Ledger's), cinematography, action sequences, and direction, and was considered one of the best films of its decade and one of the greatest and most influential films of all time. During its theatrical run, the film also established a number of records. With the exception of WALL-E, The Dark Knight featured on 287 reviewers' top-ten lists in 2008, more than any other film, and more critics (77) ranked The Dark Knight the greatest film released that year.
