The Freedom Writers Diary Teacher's Guide
Through their organization, the Freedom Writers Foundation, Erin Gruwell and the Freedom Writers continue to share their experiences with children and teachers all across the world. They are the focus of the 2019 PBS documentary Freedom Writers: Stories from the Heart, as well as the 2007 feature picture Freedom Writers, starring Hilary Swank. Gruwell is a resident of Long Beach.
The Journal of the Freedom Writers The Teacher's Guide walks students through a three-step approach that will help them grasp The Freedom Writers Diary and promote the primary theme of tolerance. For the best outcomes, I recommend starting with the Engage Your Students activities and teaching them in the order presented–which corresponds to the timeline in "The Freedom Writers Diary". The exercises in Enlighten Your Students and Empower Your Students can then be taught according to your own curricular requirements and weekly timetable. There are no set time limits for the exercises in this Teacher's Guide. Teachers can conduct activities over a single class hour or over several days.
A standards-based teacher's guide from the author of the #1 New York Times bestselling "The Freedom Writers Diary" and it is one of the best books on teaching, with new teaching approaches that will engage, empower, and enlighten students. Here, Gruwell delves deeper into her unconventional but highly effective educational strategies and techniques (all 150 of her "unteachable" students graduated from Wilson High School in Long Beach, California): from her highly successful "toast for change" (an exercise in which Gruwell exhorted her students to leave the past behind and start fresh) to writing exercises that emphasize the importance of journal writing, vocabulary, and more.
