The Great Market Hall
The Great Market Hall is an indoor market that was opened as early as the end of the 19th century! It is also located at the end of Váci street (the other end of the square) and offers a vast number of stalls across 3 floors. Visitors can find in the market food stalls (to take home or eat as you go), local Hungarian crafts like wooden toys, table maps, kitchen tools, and much more. At the turn of the 19th-20th century, after Budapest was formed by unifying Buda, Pest, and Óbuda, the city began flourishing and expanding. The chaotic outdoor markets could no longer adequately supply the growing number of inhabitants with fresh produce. The city leaders decided to build covered market halls similar to those in Paris and other Western European cities. This market is considered not only a prime attraction in Budapest but also the best indoor market in the world.
The Great Market Hall is the largest and oldest indoor market in Budapest, Hungary. The idea to build such a large hall arose from Budapest's first mayor, Károly Kamermayer, and it was his biggest investment. The Great Market Hall is home to stalls selling fresh fruit, vegetables, paprika, hot dogs, and more. It consists of 3 floors, in the basement, the focus is on meat and fish; the stalls on the ground floor mainly sell groceries, spices, wine, and meat; upstairs, there are Hungarian food and craft stalls selling traditional Hungarian dishes. Opened in 1897, it is the oldest fair in the city and is notable both for its size and beautiful architecture.
