The Thieves (2012)

Choi Dong-2012 hoon's South Korean heist action comedy film The Thieves has an ensemble cast. The action comedy is the eighth highest-grossing picture in Korean film history, with over 12.9 million ticket sales. This popular South Korean super-caper film finds two teams of professional thieves—one from Seoul, the other from Hong Kong—joining forces to boost a jewel for an old associate named Macau Park. It's a cross-pollinated mixture of Hollywood-blockbuster bombast, Asian cool, and '60s Vegas ring-a-ding swing. There's only one minor catch: the jewel sought by this criminal underworld legend is, predictably, hidden within a heatproof casino.

Meticulous plans will be devised; catsuits will hug the curves of beautiful women; someone will turn out to be a mole for the fuzz; safes will be cracked; Simon Yam will rock a white suit like nobody's business; and, once things begin to unravel, old animosities will be set aside in the name of post betrayal retaliation. The question isn't whether this sleek, elegant import rips off Ocean's Eleven, Rififi, and others, but how much fun director Choi Dong-hoon and his Pan-Asian ensemble can have with such an obvious genre retreading—the answer is virtually off the charts.
