Türkiye Petrol Rafinerileri
Türkiye Petrol Rafinerileri A.Ş. is a Turkish company that runs four refineries that can handle 30 million tons of fuel annually.
Tüpraş has four oil plants, three of which process crude oil from other countries. The 11 million tonnes/yr Izmit refinery in northwestern Turkey and the 11 million tonnes/yr Izmir refinery at Aliaga on Turkey's central Aegean coast process crude from global markets brought by tanker. The 5 million tonnes/yr Kirikkale refinery in central Turkey processes crude brought to Turkey's Mediterranean oil hub at Ceyhan and moved to the refinery via a custom pipeline. The fourth refinery, the 1.1 million tonnes/year Batman refinery, handles crude oil from many small oil fields in southeast Turkey. The crude oil gets to the refinery through an existing pipeline network and by road tanker.
Tupras also owns most of the shipping company DİTAŞ (79.98%) and, since 2006, 40% of the gas station chain Opet.
İPRAŞ (İstanbul Petrol Rafinerisi A.Ş.) was started by the U.S. Caltex Company, which is now a part of Chevron. In 1983, İPRAŞ and three other factories that were owned by the public were taken over by the state and put under the Tüpraş umbrella. In 1991, an initial public offering (IPO) sold 2.5% of shares to the public. By 2005, a number of private offerings had brought this number up to 49%. In 2005, Koç Holding and Shell put in a bid of more than $4 billion to buy the remaining 51% interest. They did this through a new joint venture company called Enerji Yatrmlar A.Ş.
The shares of the company were split as follows:
- IKoç Holding A.Ş. owned 75%.
- Aygaz A.Ş. owned 20%.
- OPET Petrolcülük A.Ş. owned 3%.
- Shell Overseas Investment B.V. owned 1.9%.
- The Shell Company of Turkey Ltd. owned 0.1%.
