"Unchained Melody" by The Righteous Brothers
"Unchained Melody" is a 1955 song written by Alex North and Hy Zaret. North composed the music for the little-known prison picture Unchained (January 1955), hence the song's title. It has subsequently become a standard and one of the most recorded songs of the twentieth century, with the Righteous Brothers performing it in 1965.
After its debut, the Righteous Brothers' version, featuring a solo by Bobby Hatfield, became the jukebox standard among the hundreds of versions created. Hatfield altered the melody in the final stanza, and many later covers are based on his version. When it was featured in the 1990 picture Ghost, the Righteous Brothers' album saw a second surge in popularity. It was ranked 27th on AFI's 100 Years...100 Songs list of best melodies in American cinema in 2004.
