Hsinchu, Taiwan is home to United Microelectronics Corporation. In 1980, it sprang off from the government-backed Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) to become the first semiconductor business in Taiwan. The semiconductor foundry division at UMC, which produces IC wafers for fabless semiconductor businesses, is the company's bread and butter. UMC is second to TSMC in this position. One is located in Taiwan, another in Singapore, a third in China, and the fourth in Japan are all 300 mm fabs.

UMC's stock code on the TWSE is 2303. UMC employs around 19,500 workers across its 12 manufacturing centers in the world. When it comes to the auto business, UMC is a major supplier.UMC, Taiwan's pioneer private integrated circuit firm, was founded on May 22, 1980 as a spinoff of the Industrial Technology Research Institute.
