Hsinchu, Taiwan is home to United Microelectronics Corporation. In 1980, it sprang off from the government-backed Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) to become the first semiconductor business in Taiwan. The semiconductor foundry division at UMC, which produces IC wafers for fabless semiconductor businesses, is the company's bread and butter. UMC is second to TSMC in this position. One is located in Taiwan, another in Singapore, a third in China, and the fourth in Japan are all 300 mm fabs.
