Using too much oil
Some home cooks appear to be treating their air fryer like a deep fryer, which seems to be the problem. For the moment, let's overlook how little sense this makes, given that the main benefit of an air fryer is that you can cook meals without using a lot of fat. However, it appears that some people continue to commit this error. What happens then if you overfill your air fryer with oil? You'll receive wet food so that's a start. The whole goal of frying anything, regardless of the technique you choose, is that the outcome will be crispy, so this is the exact opposite of what you want.
But much worse than that is not likely to occur. Overstuffed food will drip oil, and when it does, it ends up on the hot bottom of the fryer beneath the basket. The fryer will smoke and possibly even overheat when this occurs. Therefore, the best case scenario is that you will receive food that is stale and less nutritious than it should be, and the worst case scenario is that you will damage your not-so-cheap appliance.
