Vietnamese Embassy Canteen
While a visit to Vietnam is unlikely, a simple and authentic supper at the Vietnamese embassy possible. If you have the opportunity, come by on Friday afternoons between 12 and 2:30 p.m, when the in-house canteen is available to the public. To enter, take the back path; you'll see a dark blue placard on an ancient door indicating the canteen's entrance. The interiors are uncomplicated, uncomplicated, and uncluttered. On one of the walls is a poster from the cover of the TinTin comic 'TinTin Au Vietnam'.
There are only two appetizers, Nem and Nem Tuoi (vegetarian version), and three main courses, Pho, Bun Cha, and Com Rang Thap Cam, on the menu. The Vietnamese take their broths very carefully. The Chicken Pho is a soup with rice noodles, chicken, and plenty of coriander and spring onions. Its flavors are mild, fragrant, and subtle. This bowl is ideal for health-conscious people. Fish sauce is diluted with a blend of sweetened vinegar, water, and lime in both Bun Cha and Com Rang Thap Cam's broths. The broth provides a layer of flavor to the otherwise bland dish. In the summer, a chilled bottle of beer is ideal. It's also offered in the canteen as a fantastic accompaniment.
