YouTube is an American online video sharing platform with headquarters in San Bruno, California. The platform, created in February 2005 by three former PayPal employees — Chad Hurley, Steve Chen, and Jawed Karim — was acquired by Google in November 2006 for US$1.65 billion and is now operational. acts as one of the subsidiaries of Google. YouTube is the second most visited website after Google Search, as ranked by Alexa Internet.
Most content on YouTube is uploaded by individuals, but media companies including CBS, BBC, Vevo and Hulu make some of their material available via YouTube as part of a partnership program with YouTube. Non-registered users can still watch most of the videos on the site, while registered users are allowed to upload an unlimited number of videos. Some videos are intended only for users over the age of 18 (e.g. videos containing sensitive or potentially offensive content).
