  1. Sunayama is a beautiful beach in Miyako Island's northwestern corner, and it's also the island's most popular. Its name translates to "Sand Mountain," because you'll have to climb one on your way there. It's in Okinawa's prefecture, around 5 kilometers from Miyako Airport and 4 kilometers from Hirara. To get to this location, which is hidden behind a dense emerald grove, it's best to rent a car.

The shore of Sunayama is covered with gritty white sand and bordered by clear turquoise sea, making it a perfect spot for snorkeling and watching fish. During peak season, you can rent flippers and snorkeling masks (April to October). However, extreme caution is advised due to the possibility of big waves and swift currents.

The beach is barely 70 meters long, yet it has one of the most beautiful vistas on the island, complete with big stones. The coastal coral arch rock, a natural centuries-old masterpiece, is the most prominent feature of the area landscapes. This is the beach's main attraction, the location portrayed in many Miyako guidebooks, and the backdrop for romantic photo shoots. You can also take refuge here from the heat. The beach is generally packed, so get there early if you want to shoot some nice shots without being disturbed.
