  1. At this fast-casual chicken joint, the Bromberg brothers — of Blue Ribbon Sushi fame — sell their famed matzo meal-crusted fried bird alongside eight different chicken sandwiches and sides like cheesy bacon fries and hush puppies.

And as expected, the Bromberg Brothers' renowned fried chicken is the main attraction on the menu at Blue Ribbon Fried Chicken. Prices range from $9.75 to $16.50 for the chicken, which is offered both by the piece and in special platters with fries and cole slaw. The chicken is prepared the way all fried chicken should be: crisp on the outside, tender inside, and with just a hint of heat. Though the special Blue Ribbon spice mix has plenty of flavor, the restaurant offers a vast selection of sauces and honeys ranging from simple wildflower honey to wasabi honey and a signature barbecue sauce.

In addition to a satisfying crispy chicken sandwich, Blue Ribbon also offers several standout chicken burgers. Served on toasted homemade buns, the burgers range from a simple patty to the more adventurous “Kerry’s Classic,” which plays on the sweet-savory trend by adding a slice of caramelized pineapple.

  2. The Halal Guys offers authentic American Halal street food with options like beef gyro, falafel, chicken or beef combo platters and it even has desserts like baklava and chocolate chip cookies.

Since Halal Guys is so well-known, they have had to take legal action against imitator companies that tried to profit from their good name. Interestingly, this only enhances their street cred. All meat-eating New Yorkers are somewhat obligated to order the cart's halal chicken or lamb over rice platters from time to time because the original carts in Midtown have been operating since 1990.

Not only is it well-known, but it is also delicious, filling, and only $6. Whichever protein you decide to order, you must oblige the cart staff when they inquire about the addition of white sauce, a slightly sour yogurt dressing that is just as important as the meat itself. Don’t get too cocky with their bright red hot sauce, its spicy punch will easily overpower the other flavors of your lunch.

    • What to order: A small combo platter with chicken and gyro meat, yellow rice, lettuce, tomato, pita, and your choice of white sauce, tahini, and/or hot sauce is $8.99.
    • Price Range: $9 - $25
    • Tripadvisor rating: 4.5/5.0

  3. Top 3

    Fuku

David Chang's fried chicken restaurant Fuku is on a mission to alter public perceptions of fast casual dining. In the original Momofuku Noodle Bar in New York City, Fuku began with a fried chicken sandwich and has since expanded to offer a variety of fried chicken dishes and sides. David Chang instilled many of the same values in Momofuku that Fuku is based on, with the goal of providing customers with approachable, delicious food that draws on both Asian and American influences.

The restaurant is serving up four chicken Sandos: Spicy Fried Chicken, Knockout (with coleslaw and pickles), Sweet & Spicy and Chicken Bacon Ranch. You can also make a meal of it with fries, pickles, a drink and 2 sauces. Other items on the menu include Fuku Fingers (4 pieces of crispy chicken tenders), Wings (6 jumbo wings sweet & spicy or gochu & garlic), and a Chicken Burger with lettuce, tomato, onions, American cheese, pickles, and Fuku mayo served on a Martins potato roll. Hash browns and loaded fries are available as side dishes.

    • What to order: The spicy chicken sandwich is $8, but at lunchtime, you can get a combo with the sandwich and fries for $12.
    • Price Range: $5 - $25

  4. If you love the taste of fresh and succulent lobster, crab or shrimp on a delicious buttery roll, then Luke's Lobster in New York City is a restaurant you should visit as soon as possible. New Yorkers have been going nuts for Luke's Lobster since 2009, when it opened its first seafood roll shack in the East Village. Now they've gone international, with more than 30 locations and a popular food truck.

The historic Smokestack Building is home to Luke’s Lobster, voted New York’s best lobster roll. In addition to their award-winning, sustainable seafood, Luke’s Lobster sells soups, a seasonal lobster tail salad and offers both kid, and gluten-free friendly options. With indoor and outdoor seating, you can choose to dine outdoors or inside their cozy Maine-style shack.

The menu is simple: lobster rolls, shrimp rolls, crab rolls, chowders, and chips and sodas. The sustainably caught seafood is fresh from Maine, the rolls are buttered and not overly bready, and the mayo is swiped on judiciously. A drizzle of lemon butter and a dash of celery salt adds decadence.

    • What to order: Most people get the $17 lobster roll, but the $9 shrimp roll — which uses sweet Maine shrimp that tastes like mini lobsters — is as good or better.
    • Price Range: $5 - $30
    • Tripadvisor rating: 4.5/5.0

  5. This well-known Nolita pizzeria is known for its square and New York-style pies. All of the pizzas, which are available by the slice or whole pie, are named after SoHo streets. The Spicy Spring, a square pie topped with hot fra diavolo tomato sauce, mozzarella, and crispy pepperonis, is unquestionably the signature. The tomato sauce is fruity and slightly sweet, the crust is the perfect thickness, and the pepperoni crisps up into delicious little cups.

Famous for its pepperoni slice this downtown Icon has a solid philosophy: If you can put it on pasta then you can put it on pizza. Whether you are in the mood for classic cheese, the Soho Square, spicy spring, or even a vegan option—Prince Street Pizza has something that will surely make your taste buds dance with pure joy. The space is tiny and aside from a few counters, there isn't much seating so your best bet is to eat your slice on the street like a true New Yorker.

    • What to order: The Spicy Spring Street Square — with fra diavolo sauce, spicy pepperoni, and mozzarella — is $3.95.
    • Price Range: Under $30
    • Tripadvisor rating: 4.5/5.0

  6. Banh Mi sandwiches are unquestionably a cheap-eating secret when it comes to the best cheap eats in NYC. The traditional paté, grilled chicken, pork, and even vegetarian options can all be stuffed to the brim into these enormous baguettes. There are options all over the city, but Brooklyn's Banh Mi Place by Prospect Park is a hidden gem.

It’s hard to find a better stateside version of the Vietnamese sandwich than Banh Mi Place’s classic, which arrives on a crisp baguette smeared with mayo and butter and layered with exactly the right amount of roasted ground pork, Vietnamese ham and pate: not overstuffed, not stingy. Their spicy sandwiches offer the perfect balance of heat, and the crispy baguettes make this humble sandwich taste practically gourmet.

The cucumber, pickled carrot and cilantro make each bite of your sandwich perfectly sweet and sour, salty and meaty – everything you’d want from a banh mi. You can also find chicken and seafood versions here, and vegetarians get an impressive roster of meatless adaptations.

    • What to order: A classic sandwich ($7.50) and a bubble tea ($4.50).
    • Price Range: Under $10
    • Tripadvisor rating: 4.5/5.0

  7. Finding a genuinely good, cheap bagel in New York City can be harder than you think. With so many options, it can be difficult to tell whether you're really finding a good bagel for an even better price. One place that is hugely recommended is Milk N' Honey in the Financial District or Midtown. This kosher establishment has all the fixings for bagels, plus sandwiches, salads, and more.

    Milk N' Honey
provides the best glatt kosher meal options in the Midtown area. The restaurant hand rolls bagels fresh daily and serves made-to-order salads, pizzas, and more!

In addition to the homemade bagels and spread options, it offers a full range of kosher foods including soups, muffins, sushi, pasta dishes, calzones, and daily specials. Stop by for coffee and a breakfast sandwich or have lunch delivered to your office. The restaurant also provides full-service catering and often delivers and serves food to many offices and events around NYC.

    • What to order: An everything bagel with lox spread, tomato, and onions is $6.25.
    • Price Range: Under $10
    • Tripadvisor rating: 4.0/5.0

  8. Take a gander at any list of the best Chinese restaurants in America, and you're bound to come across the name Xi'an Famous Foods. The restaurant claims it was the first restaurant in the United States to offer Xi'an cuisine. While it may be relatively unknown to those outside its hometown of New York City, this chain of fast-casual eateries is no secret to locals. Once a solitary Flushing favorite, Xi'an Famous Foods exploded into Manhattan after appearing on a 2008 episode of Anthony Bourdain's "No Reservations" travel show.

    Xi'an Famous Foods
has quickly become a mini-empire with meals that are well-represented on the menu, including its signature Liang Pi "Cold-Skin Noodles." The spicy cumin lamb noodles and “burger” sandwiches are about as good a spicy cheap meal as you can find. Xi’an’s presence in Midtown is great because this area desperately needs more cheap and more delicious things to eat for lunch. If you spend your weekdays here, you’re already aware of this.

    • What to order: Spicy cumin lamb hand-ripped noodles ($7.81 to $11.21) or stewed pork hand-ripped noodles ($6.89 to $10.15). The stewed pork burger ($3.81 to $4.68 ) is also pretty delicious.

  9. Many Thai restaurants in New York tame the flavors of their dishes, particularly on the spiciness front, to comply with the Western palate. Refreshingly, this Elmhurst establishment refuses to do so. At Ayada Thai, chef and owner Duangjai Thammasat has curated a menu that doesn't hold your hand when it comes to spice and flavor. The food here spans across the country — from Southern Thai curries to Bangkok-style dishes.

Few Thai restaurants in New York serve sator beans, which have a bitter taste that seems to travel across one's palate after biting into them. They're mixed with spicy chilies and shrimp and are worth a try just for the novelty. The kang som sour curry is another dish that is rarely seen outside of Thailand. Squares of omelet, infused with the herb cha-om, bob in a pucker-inducing sour coconut curry.

For those who don’t want to stray from the usual canon of Thai delights, Ayada also does pad thai and drunken noodles very well. Sweep away the spiciness with a fried banana and ice cream, or just order another glass of sangria.

    • What to order: Tom Yum ($8 - $15), Tom Kha Soup ($8 - $14) or Spring Rolls ( $10).

  10. Lodged smack in the center of a bustling East Village swath of bars and restaurants, Huertas stands out for its Basque-style tapas and pintxos from former Maialino chef Jonah Miller. In the front room and at the bar, it recalls a sort of Spanish version of a dim sum place, with waiters roaming around with small plates that diners can nab: crispy lamb meatballs; slices of creamy potato-laden Spanish tortillas on bread; and grilled octopus.

From dining room buyouts to large party reservations, Huertas offers several different options tailored to fit a variety of events, whether personal or professional. The patatas bravas are fairly standard, but the boquerones (white anchovies) are delicate and worth savoring. Meanwhile, the back dining room serves the Menu del Dia, a changing fixed-price four-course meal that might include oil-poached hake or roasted veal breast, followed by a sweet stuffed empanada for dessert. The extensive list of Spanish wines includes some reasonably priced bottles, and there's also vermouth on tap.

    • What to order: Basque Dog ($8), Manchego ($12) and Shishitos ($13) is delicious.
    • Price Range: $31 to $50
