  1. Heroes de Vertieres is an open-air sculpture park devoted to the heroes of the 1803 Battle of Vertieres, the first site mentioned on the list of the most beautiful historical sites in Haiti.

The Combat of Vertières was the final significant fight of the Second War of Haitian Independence and the final battle of the Haitian Revolution commanded by Jean Jacques Dessalines. It took place on November 18, just south of what is now Cap-Hatien.

A visit to the Heroes de Vertieres, an amazing sight that commemorates a significant time in history, is especially powerful for tourists from the Haitian diaspora. The monument is located on the city's western outskirts, a five-minute drive from both the Hôtel Impérial and one of our favorite restaurants in Cap-Hatien, Lakay.

  2. The Republic of Haiti owns the National Historic Park - Citadelle, Sans-Souci, Ramiers. The site is protected by the Law on the Protection of Monuments and Sites of 1941. By presidential order in 1978, the National Historic Park that preserves the monumental zone of the Citadelle, the Palace Sans-Souci, and the Ramiers Site was established. ISPAN, Haiti's specialized agency founded in 1979, is in charge of its administration.

Since 2013, the National Historic Park has been overseen by an Interministerial Management Council comprised of members from the six ministries and presided over by the Prime Minister of the Republic. The Directorate General of ISPAN, the State focal point, is in charge of the Council's permanent secretariat.

ISPAN developed a temporary management structure in early 2014, with the primary purpose of preparing the Administration Plan for the NHP-CSSR and the eventual structure for its management. Long-term expected outcomes include the implementation of the Management Plan, the development of the NHP-CSSR in accordance with the participatory and coordinated plan, the stabilization and protection of historic monuments from water infiltration, and the development of cultural and tourism activities.

  3. The Citadelle is a massive early-nineteenth-century structure. The Citadelle, commissioned by Haitian rebel Henri Christophe and erected by tens of thousands of ex-slaves, was the cornerstone of the newly independent Haiti's defensive plan against potential French encroachment.

The stronghold, which includes other smaller forts around the nation, is the sole African-derived military fortress in the New World, as well as the earliest example of African-derived colonial architecture, which it shares with Christophe's Sans-Souci Palace. The citadel, along with the aforementioned Sans-Souci, was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982 and is widely considered as an emblem of the Caribbean nation.

Despite Haiti's shortcomings in preserving its own cultural artifacts, international organizations like the Global Heritage Fund, a non-profit organization based in California, have investigated the Citadelle for monument conservation, community development, training, and cultural heritage revitalization. The project would concentrate on the Citadelle and the adjoining Sans-Souci Palace, with the goal of conserving the monuments as safe tourist destinations to foster long-term local economic growth.

  4. Fort des Oliviers is a fortress located in southern Haiti. It is also one of the most beautiful historical sites in Haiti.

With the Ministry of Tourism and its minister, Stephanie B. Villedrouin, as well as the Martelly administration attempting to rebrand Haiti as a tourist destination, speculation is rife as to why certain untapped spots remain out of the running for the slew of planned revitalizations set to revitalize many a local, historic, and beatific locale. Fort des Oliviers is one such location.

The 18th century fort, erected by the French in their fight against the English, is located upstream of Saint-Louis du Sud's harbor and has been described as "history lurking in plain sight." Aside from the natural beauty of the area, Fort des Oliviers boasts around 128 km2 of historical sites. Nonetheless, despite its numerous attractions and a small population of 76,000 people, the place is unnoticed, underdeveloped, and completely ignored by the powers that be.

The living heritage of monuments such as Fort des Oliviers makes it hard to divorce the landscape's compelling natural beauty from the past that has fashioned contemporary Haiti as a live, breathing organism. This feeling of identity and purpose fuels the carnival spirit and zest for life that distinguishes Haiti as one of the greatest locations to visit in the Caribbean
