The world's most expensive chocolates come and go. Due to the inclusion of rare jewelry, some limited-edition boxes have sold for millions of dollars. Others ... read more...

  1. The Royal Book Chocolate Selection is the most expensive chocolate available. This item is similar to the commemorative "Big Book" box set mentioned earlier on this list, but it is far more lavish. To commemorate its chocolatier's 200th anniversary, this luxury gift box contains approximately 150 different types of chocolate.

The ganache and praline fillings are delectable. This set, like the Big Book, includes an actual book about the history of Maison Debauve et Gallais.

The blue and grey boxes containing Debauve & Gallais chocolate delicacies are a centuries-old tradition. In 1821, they created the trademark packaging as a tribute to the royal décor after becoming official purveyors of confectionaries for the royal French court. It was trademarked as the official Debauve & Gallais design in 1913.

  2. This small chocolate box by deLafée, a Swiss luxury chocolatier, costs a pretty penny for eight pieces of chocolate.

The Gold Swiss Chocolate Box contains candies encased in 24-karat edible gold. They also include an antique gold Swiss Vreneli 10 Francs coin with a guaranteed date between 1911 and 1922. Your gold treasures cost a total of $517.

Another, smaller box of this chocolate costs $412.50 and contains two chocolate pieces. We didn't list it separately because of its similarity, as well as the fact that the coin and collection itself account for so much of the box's value.

    Did you know that?

The Swiss Vreneli 10 Franc coins were made of 900 gold and were only minted for 11 years. There are only 2.6 million of these coins (which may seem like a lot, but it isn't in terms of money). Some of them include chocolate.

  3. This $450 chocolate bar pays homage to both traditional Ecuadorian chocolate and its most celebrated artist, Oswaldo Guayasamin. Art Series Guayasamin is a 77 percent cacao duality blend with flavors of wood, caramel, tobacco, and honey, as well as earthy toffee notes on the finish.

The Heirloom Nacional cacao used in this chocolate is on the verge of extinction, but with the remaining seeds, many are attempting to revive the nearly 5,000-year-old chocolate tradition.

    Did you know that?

The Guayasamin drawing on the box of this chocolate depicts an indigenous Ecuadorian man who has been cruelly beaten and misshapen, but who is bent over to plant a new tree. This exemplifies not only a national identity of adversity, but also of resilience.

  4. Here's an option for those who want to get a lot of gourmet chocolate gifts without sacrificing quality. Godiva's Gold Collection Ultimate Appreciate Gift Set costs $356 but includes 105 chocolates (about $3.40 each).

Godiva favorites such as milk, white, dark, Belgian, ganache, caramel, fruit, and praline chocolates are included in each box. This gift set is intended to be a multifaceted present for a variety of ladies (or one really hungry one). This one has no fancy inserts or gold leaf wrappers. It's all about the chocolate in this case.

Godiva was founded in Belgium in 1926, but it now calls New York City home. It has over 600 stores worldwide and is known for being both a gourmet chocolatier and one that is still affordable to the average person.

  5. Katrina Markoff, the founder of Vosges Haut-Chocolat, adores the Grateful Dead branded crossovers she's been able to pull off with her chocolate company. Grateful Dead: A Collection of Curated Chocolates + Cosmic Crystals is the most expensive currently available.

The various chocolate creations are dusted, flavored, and sculpted into new forms to serve as adornments for the chakra crystals, as seen in the photo. This $350 box of chocolates is advertised as both soul-nourishing and delicious.

    Did you know that?

When it comes to hipster chocolate recombination, Vosges is known for its outrageous flavor profile (the French chocolatiers on this list would squirm!). It has been offering unusual flavors like chili, ginger, black sesame, fennel-pollen, floral-anise, and even chocolate wasabi since 1998.

  6. Debauve & Gallais released The Big Book to commemorate their 200th anniversary. These chocolates are packaged in a commemorative leather box in the shape of a book and inlaid with gold leaf. We tried not to order this list based on the value of the box, but it is a nostalgic nod to the Rue des Saints-Peres, the Parisian street where the Debauve & Gallais chocolate factory was built by architects Charles Percier and Pierre-Francois-Léonard Fontaine. It had to be extravagant.

This leather-bound big book of ganache and praline chocolates costs 239 €, or about $280.

    Debauve & Gallais
are so proud of their history that their book includes not only the chocolates but also a book detailing their house of chocolate artisans' 200+ year history.

  7. In place of that pricey single truffle, here's a box of 54 dark chocolates from Debauve & Gallais' "Royal Collection." It comes in the same handcrafted blue/gray box that the brand has used to sell its treasures since 1913. This is the perfect chocolate for those who prefer their chocolate dark.

Le Royale 54 comes with an assortment of incredible chocolates, ranging from pralines to dark ganache to a variety of outrageously delicious treats. Some take familiar forms, others shimmer, and still others are sculpted into fleurs-de-lis. Although $285 is a steep price, this must be the best balance of essentially affordable quality and sheer quantity of any high-class gift on this list.

    Did you know that?
Since 1800, Debauve & Gallais has been producing chocolate. Surprisingly, they officially supplied chocolate to Emperor Napoleon and Louis XVIII. Buyers consume a piece of French history when they consume Le Royale 54.

  8. La Madeline au Truffe, also known as Madeline Truffle, is unique on this list in that, despite being the cheapest entry, the price is for a single piece of chocolate rather than a box or collection. The truffle is made with 70% Valrhona dark chocolate as its base. The ganache is made with heavy cream, vanilla, and truffle oil, and it is encased in the center by a French Périgord truffle. This is, of course, dusted with cocoa powder.

Your La Madeline au Truffe will arrive in a gold and wood box. The truffle is surrounded by ribbons and rests on a bed of candy pearls. The box says "Guinness World Records" on the outside because this truffle, which costs $250, is recognized as the world's most expensive single chocolate.

The House of Knipschildt, despite its name and use of classic European confectionary techniques, is actually located in Connecticut.

    Did you know that?
    Périgord
truffles or black truffles are Southern European mushrooms that are not typically found in chocolate. Because they are the second most expensive edible fungus on the planet (after white truffles), they are highly sought-after ingredients in meat, soup, and risotto dishes. They significantly enhance the flavor (and the price tag) of this luxurious chocolate in the center.
