7132 Therme Vals
This minimalist spa complex at 7132 Therme Vals is so popular that worshippers are willing to travel 200 kilometers (124 miles) from Zürich to soak in its hydrotherapy pools. Architects and architectural aficionados visit this modest community in the small Graubuenden valley from all over the world. For an outstanding architect has constructed a spa resort there, made of pure stone, greenish in hue, and weighing tons. By the way, the 7132 Therme in Vals is also a healing temple.
It was created in conjunction with the mountain and the surrounding terrain, layering stone atop stone and presenting spectacular light effects: the green 7132 Therme Vals. The structure is made of 60,000 quartz fragments from the surrounding mountains. They produce a mysterious, sensuous, and surprisingly light vehicle for the hot waters when combined. The waters, which originate in the Valser Valley and are full of medicinal minerals, are pleasant warm at 30 degrees Celsius.
Therme Vals is transformed into a mythical sanctuary of serenity by stone and water at varying temperatures (interior pool 32°C, outdoor pool 30°C to 36°C), as well as the influence of changing light throughout the day. Blossom spa, sound grotto, cold and fire bath, steam baths, and drinking stones coexist in this rock structure, which was the first in Switzerland to be certified a protected monument immediately after it opened. Its architect, Peter Zumthor, received the world's most prestigious architectural prize for this masterpiece.
