Hévíz Lake
Hévíz Lake is located in Hungary, on the western edge of Lake Balaton, about 8 kilometers from Keszthely. With a surface area of 47,500 square meters, it is Europe's largest thermal lake and the world's second largest thermal lake. Hot waters of varying temperatures disseminate from cracks beneath the surface of the water, mixing with the cold water of the lake to form a consistent temperature that remains constant throughout the season. The water contains carbonic acid, sulphur, calcium, magnesium, hydrogen carbonate, and even slightly radioactive compounds that are thought to be therapeutic.
At the middle of the lake is a wooden bath house built in the 18th century that appears almost exactly the same as it did more than two centuries ago. Beautiful water lilies, introduced to Hungary at the end of the nineteenth century, dot the lake, adding to the diverse ecosystem. Mist covers the top, reducing evaporation, while creepers preserve the therapeutic mud at the lake's bottom. The peat-bottomed lake is nourished by mineral-rich cold and warm water that originates in springs located in a 40-meter-deep cave. The spring's flow is so strong that it totally replenishes the lake every three days. The temperature of the lake varies between 23-25 °C in winter and 33-36 °C in summer. The healing effect of the lake is said to be due to the lake's unique combination of organic and inorganic components. Lake Heviz is a dynamically active lake with a diverse bacterial population. Some of the species present in the lake's waters are unique to it.
