Former Sunrise producer Mikihiro Iwata formed the Japanese animation studio A-1 Pictures, Inc., a division of Sony Music Entertainment Japan's Aniplex, which produces anime. A-1 Pictures was established in 2005 to produce animations for Aniplex, and it has produced some incredible works, including Sword Art Online, Fairy Tail, Your Lie in April, and Silver Spoon.


To animate its anime series and productions, the studio was founded by SMEJ's Aniplex animation production division on May 9, 2005. It built a studio in Asagaya in October of the same year and collaborated on the creation of Zenmai Zamurai in 2006. The studio's first series, Kiku Furikabutte, was released the following year, in 2007.
