The easternmost point of the Maya Mountains, in the southern part of Stann Creek, is where Antelope Falls is situated in Mayflower Bocawina State Park. This waterfall is one of the tallest in the nation at around 1,000 feet. Antelope Falls follows a path that involves 550 feet of rising over 1.1 miles of hiking each way, with the route's destination being a green pool at the base of a set of falls. However, the second half of the climb is up a steep and slippery route that uses tree roots for footholds and ropes stretched between trees for support. The bottom portion of the hike is moderate and even offers some level stretches.
The falls have an upper and lower section, with the latter being the simpler to access. Although the hike to Antelope Falls is more challenging than others, the panoramic views of the surrounding jungle and the Caribbean Sea (from the top) make the effort worthwhile. As an extra treat, there is an emerald-colored freshwater swimming hole at the base of the lower falls that is the ideal place to cool off before beginning the journey back down the hill. The park offers guided hikes to Mayan sites, zip-lining, and bird-watching excursions.
