Bill Cosford Cinema
The Bill Cosford Cinema is considered one of the best movie theaters in Miami, and has been serving the University of Miami, Coral Gables, and greater Miami for more than 60 years. The theater has a 70-square-foot screen that shows 35mm and a range of high-definition digital formats. The Cosford is a non-profit art house theater dedicated to distinguished film programming and supplemental educational opportunities such as special lecture series, guest scholars, international film festivals, and engagements with acclaimed filmmakers such as Chantal Akerman, John Landis, and Andy Garcia, among many others.
Bill Cosford Film is dedicated to presenting a wide and discriminating program of independent, foreign, experimental, and classic cinema. The Cosford Cinema, being a non-profit art house facility, displays its programming for little-to-no cost, ensuring that spectators have significant access to alternative types of cinema (including documentary, experimental, and classic films) as well as international films. Since its inception, Cosford has sought to both entertain and educate. Their objective is to promote the aesthetic and social significance of the film, as well as to foster critical reflection and serious thought about the film.
In 1994, the Bill Cosford Cinema was renamed in honor of Bill Cosford, a noted film critic for the Miami Herald and a professor of cinema at the University of Miami. Always a supporter of the Beaumont Cinema, Cosford was essential in refurbishing and sustaining the space, which he thought was sorely needed in Miami. More than 60 years after its inception, the theater has played an important part in the area's recent rebirth of art film. The Bill Cosford Cinema continues to provide the public with the greatest films from across the world as well as an open venue to study, discuss, and enjoy cinema.
