Tower Theater
Since 2005, MDC's Tower Theater Miami has been South Florida's highest-grossing art-house cinema. Their objective is to link art to audiences and to instill a love of film in future generations. The Miami Film Festival is housed at The Theater all year. Free instructional screenings for students and discounted rental prices for non-profits to promote the film without commercial constraints are examples of their charitable efforts. The Tower Theater at MDC Miami is one of the city's most historic cultural landmarks. It was the finest state-of-the-art theater in the South when it debuted in December 1926.
Many Cuban refugees migrated to Miami in the early 1960s. The neighborhood around S.W. Eighth Street, known as "Calle Ocho," became a location of new beginnings. Films at Tower Theater Miami served as an introduction to American culture as well as sheer fun for many Cuban families. Soon after, the theater began showing English-language films with Spanish subtitles, and then Spanish-language films. Tower Theater, however, was closed to the public in 1984 after over sixty years of existence.
The City of Miami granted Miami Dade College permission to restore the theater in 2002. MDC's Tower Theater Miami was named "one of the ten great places to see a movie in splendor" by USA Today in the newspaper's round-up of the best old-fashioned movie palaces in America in 2011, and the theater came under the programming and operational direction of MDC's Miami Film Festival the same year. Tower Theater Miami thrives today as a social gathering place for cultural connections in Little Havana, where the community can enjoy alternative and culturally specific exhibitions, performances, and independent and international films, specializing in both Spanish-language films and English-language films with Spanish subtitles.
