Joseph Cheaney founded Cheaney in 1886, then in 1896, he and his brother Arthur moved to the location where the factory is still located today. Originally, Cheaney created white label shoes exclusively for some of the world's most prestigious stores, each customized to their specific needs. But it was the founder's grandson, Joseph Humphrey Cheaney, who saw the necessity for the company to develop its own line of shoes.

Cheaney was sold to Church's English Shoes in 1964, allowing the brand to be distributed to merchants all over the world, with the Desborough factory providing a comprehensive in-stock service. Jonathan and William Church, who are both relatives of a family that has been creating high-quality shoes for five generations, bought the company in 2009. Most importantly, they are fully committed to providing the greatest English-made footwear.

Glossy leather is created with a permanent high shine by applying layers of acrylic or resin over the leather to give it a shine.
