George Cleverley
George Cleverley was born on August 10, 1898, into a shoemaking family in London, and began working as an apprentice at the age of 15. After serving in the army during WWI, he went to work for Tuczec, a high-end London shoemaker on Clifford Street in Mayfair. He stayed for 38 years before leaving in 1958 to start his own company, G.J.Cleverley of Cork Street, Mayfair, London.
He created the 'Cleverley shape,' a graceful, chiseled-toed shoe that became a brand signature. While Cleverley shoes are handcrafted in London, the closing is outsourced. And their ready-to-wear shoes are made in Northampton (by a couple of the above-mentioned shoe manufacturers).
