Deutsche Schule Budapest
The German School of Budapest, also known as Deutsche Schule Budapest, is a private international school in Hungary's capital. It was established in 1908 to support German families living in Hungary and has become a diverse institution with students mainly from expatriate business and diplomatic communities. Recognized as one of the best schools, it received a Certificate of Excellence from the Central Agency for German Schools Abroad in 2012 and again in 2020.
With around 500 students, Deutsche Schule Budapest has a Primary School for Grades 1 to 4 (Grundschule) and a Secondary School for Grades 5 to 12. The school maintains a solid bicultural academic curriculum, boasting a graduation rate close to 100% and one of the country's highest university admission rates (95%). While the primary language of instruction is German, some classes are taught in Hungarian based on the student's academic program. Due to the limited German proficiency of many Hungarian students, the teaching approach is increasingly becoming bilingual.
Deutsche Schule Budapest is renowned for its excellence in mathematics, science, and language. Students consistently excel in standardized tests, participate in international and national academic competitions, and earn language certificates through collaborations with the Institut Français and the Instituto Cervantes.
Teachers at the school are recommended and appointed by the German Ministry for Education and are highly competitive positions based on three-year contracts. In some cases, especially for subjects taught in Hungarian, the school hires teachers directly from Hungary, requiring a minimum of several years of experience at a reputable Hungarian secondary school.
Deutsche Schule Budapest's campus spans 35 hectares in the Buda hills, offering a picturesque city view and easy access via public transport. The primary school and cafeteria are housed in a historic hunting lodge, while the secondary school and administrative offices are in a modern building. Specialty classrooms, a computer room, a library, a gym, and a fully equipped theater contribute to the well-rounded educational environment. Outdoor facilities include a playground, basketball and soccer courts, and a running track, with all classrooms equipped with Smart Boards.
