Dia: Beacon
The Dia Art Foundation is dedicated to advancing, realizing, and maintaining artistic vision. By commissioning projects from a single artist, planning exhibits, creating site-specific installations, and intensively gathering the work of a select group of artists from the 1960s and 1970s, Dia accomplishes its purpose.
Near an old Nabisco box printing facility on the banks of the Hudson River in Beacon, New York, Dia Art Foundation launched Dia Beacon in May 2003. The museum features artwork from the 1960s to the current day in addition to special exhibitions and community events. Since its debut, Dia Beacon has contributed to transforming Beacon into a thriving arts destination for travelers from the surrounding area, New York City, and elsewhere.
Philippa de Menil, Heiner Friedrich, and Helen Winkler established Dia in New York City in 1974 with the goal of assisting artists in realizing ambitious projects that might not otherwise be feasible due to scale or scope. They chose the name "Dia," which is derived from the Greek word for "through," to allude to the institution's part in supporting such goals. Dia Chelsea in New York City, Dia Beacon in the Hudson Valley, and Dia Bridgehampton on Long Island are the organization's three shifting exhibition venues in New York State. Today, it has eight permanent locations spread across the United States and Germany.
