Grounds for Sculpture
A Board of Trustees, which controls the public, non-profit organization Grounds For Sculpture, is responsible for the smooth administration of the sculpture park and museum. In order to provide its extensive programs and events each year, Grounds For Sculpture-a nonprofit public institution-depends on the assistance of visitors, art patrons, donations, and grants.
Seward Johnson, an artist, and philanthropist, founded Grounds For Sculpture. It was a logical progression from its predecessor, The Johnson Atelier, and it debuted in 1992 on the site of the previous New Jersey State Fairgrounds. Johnson recognized the potential of the nearby former fairgrounds as a location where art could be sited within the landscape and tourists may pleasure in discovering contemporary sculpture. At the Atelier, hundreds of artists learned and produced their work.
Here, you may see the artwork of over 700 painters. 150 artists, including Clement Meadmore, Anthony Caro, Beverly Pepper, Kiki Smith, George Segal, Magdalena Abakanowicz, Isaac Witkin, Joyce J. Scott, Willie Cole, and collection founder Seward Johnson, contributed sculptures to the collection. Many sculptors may trace their roots back to this area, and more artists are given the rare chance to produce new site-specific works for the galleries or outdoors every year.
