Durankulak
Durankulak is a village in the Dobrich Province of northeastern Bulgaria, part of the Shabla Municipality. Durankulak, located in the historical region of Southern Dobruja, is Bulgaria's northernmost inhabited place and the northernmost village on the Bulgarian Black Sea Coast, though the village itself is slightly inland. The only places to the north along the coast are the formerly exclusively Czechoslovak camping site Kosmos and the Kartalburun and Sivriburun headlands, which are located north of the town of Shabla.
The coastal Lake Durankulak is to the southeast, and the Durankulak Swamp, also known as Eagles' Swamp, is to the northeast, towards the Black Sea—the two are linked by an artificial but overgrown marshy canal. The Anna Maria beach, which extends up to Sivriburun and the border, is also located to the northeast of the village. Another beach south of the village extends all the way to Krapets. It is one of the few wild beaches that has been preserved to this day, and while there have been some suggestions to "civilize" the area, this has not yet occurred. Because it is also Bulgaria's easternmost point, the sun rises in Durankulak about 18 minutes earlier than in Sofia. So you can sit there and watch the sun rays appear on the horizon, smugly believing that you are the first person in the entire country to notice it!
