El Haouaria

El Haouaria's long white sand beach, surrounded by villas and restaurants, is a favorite among tourists in northeastern Tunisia. The cliffs along the rugged coastline and deep waters of all shades of blue are especially admired by divers and photography enthusiasts. The beach locates at the tip of the Cap Bon Peninsula.

Behind the port, a narrow stretch of sand is replaced by a series of pristine cobblestone bays with stunningly clear waters. Tables on the open terraces of waterfront restaurants tumble to the water's edge. From here you can watch the sunset over the sea near the island of Zembra.

In spring, this stunning sight is complemented by another natural attraction. Because El Haouaria locates on a bird migration route, from March to May, thousands of birds fly on the beach from Africa to Europe.

Two dozen caves stretch along the rocky coast of El Haouaria. They arose as a result of the Carthaginians and Romans mining valuable stones needed to carry out construction projects such as the Colosseum in Rome and the coliseum in El Jem. Most of the caves are fenced in now. You can't get into them, but you can wander around the nearest little ravines, and if you're lucky, you might find ancient chisels in them.
