Block Island, named after the Dutch navigator Adriaen Block, is an island in the U.S. state of Rhode Island that is situated in Block Island Sound about 9 miles (14 km) south of the mainland and 14 miles (23 km) east of Montauk Point, Long Island, New York It is situated near the town of New Shoreham and is a part of Washington County. Block Island is one of the 12 sites in the western hemisphere on The Nature Conservancy's list of "The Last Great Places," with around 40% of the island designated for conservation. It belongs to the coastal archipelago known as the Outer Lands.


Block Island is a well-liked summer vacation spot with hiking, biking, sailing, fishing, and beaches. Many residents who live here year-round enjoy the sport of surfing. Visitors of all ages can enjoy body surfing and boogie boarding from one of the lovely sandy beaches. Cycling is the greatest way to explore the island. The stone walls and rolling hills make for a beautiful environment and an excellent workout. Rent a moped or go on an island tour in one of the many taxis for a more relaxed island experience. During your trip, which usually lasts an hour, the taxi driver can educate you on the history and details of the island. Miles of natural pathways are available on Block Island for hiking and bird watching. While visiting this charming little gem in the ocean, you may do parasailing, banana boating, fishing, kite surfing, kayaking, paddle boarding, and sailing, to name just a few.
