Walk around Newport's Cliff Walk and The Breakers
Visiting Newport's Cliff Walk and The Breakers is one of the Best Things to Do in Rhode Island. The Cliff Walk, a 3.5-mile path with breathtaking vistas of the ocean below, is ironically free to the public, significantly cheaper than the price of the lavish Gilded Age houses it follows. There are several entry locations to this promenade in Newport, and an online map is available to help you navigate. You'll pass past 64 private mansions' gardens as you walk along the path, where attractions include the 40 Steps: As the name implies, there are around 40 stone steps leading to the lake below. This area used to be a favorite gathering spot for the servants of the nearby estates.
Cliff Walk may be beautiful, but it can't compare to a tour of one of the Gilded beauties with a prestigious address in this area of Newport. There are several exquisite houses to select from, but none is as well-known as The Breakers, which used to be the Vanderbilt family's opulent vacation residence. Year-round self-guided tours are offered, but the Preservation Society of Newport County has also created a 45-minute family-friendly tour to help kids use their imaginations to experience the lives of the wealthy individuals, including children, who formerly resided in these lavishly decorated halls.
