Take a walk down Benefit Street
Benefit Street, which served as Providence's social hub throughout the Colonial and early Federal periods and is still a bustling, tree-lined downtown street with beautiful Victorian buildings, has earned the moniker "Mile of History." The house built for 18th-century trader John Brown, who was the first to build away from the Providence coastline and chose instead to go for a high hill, is one of the most noteworthy residences on this stone and brick-paved stretch. John Quincy Adams, a former president, referred to it as one of the most exquisite residences he had ever seen.
Some of the original furnishings from the John Brown House, which is now a public museum, showcase the famed cabinetry work of Rhode Island's early craftsmen. Visitors to the museum can also see a carriage that George Washington is said to have ridden in and a sizable collection of relics. According to recent visitors, Benefit Street and the mansion are both interesting for their architecture and history.
