Peer at the Green Animals Topiary Garden
The dozens of topiaries at Green Animals in Portsmouth are a true circus of geometric patterns and landscaping animals like elephants and giraffes. Green Animals is the oldest topiary garden in the nation; Joseph Carreiro worked there as a gardener and property manager from 1905 to 1945, long before "Edward Scissorhands." When Thomas Brayton, the treasurer of the Union Cotton Manufacturing Company, passed away at the age of 94, his daughter Alice gave the once-private estate to The Preservation Society of Newport County so that everyone may enjoy it.
The garden features floral floods of tulips, lupines, hydrangeas, and more in addition to sculpted bushes. The American Daffodil Society gave Green Animals official recognition for its collection of daffodils, which includes 49 different types and tens of thousands of bulbs. Only during mild weather is the garden open daily, with May and June being the best months to see flowers. Although many people think the entrance costs are a bit high, visitors agree the gardens and flowers are worth a visit.
