Gangnam Beauty
Gangnam Beauty is a South Korean television series that premiered in 2018. It stars Im Soo-hyang, Cha Eun-woo, Jo Woo-ri, and Kwak Dong-yeon. Based on the same-name webtoon published by Naver WEBTOON in 2016, it follows the life of a college student who undergoes cosmetic surgery to avoid ridicule from her bullies, but her decision appears to backfire as her peers mock her artificial appearance. The title of the webtoon and TV series alludes to the Korean term gangnammiin (Gangnam beauty), a derogatory term in South Korea for people who are attractive but appear to have undergone a number of plastic surgeries to achieve a pretty face, a hot body, or both.
From July 27 to September 15, 2018, the series aired on JTBC every Friday and Saturday at 23:00 (KST). It received praise for depicting issues affecting South Korean society, particularly superficial beauty standards and physical appearance discrimination. The series received a lot of praise for its cryptic depiction of the main character's childhood. Viewers praised director Choi for his sensitive portrayal of the characters.
