Gary Player
Gary James Player (born November 1, 1935) is a former professional golfer from South Africa who is widely regarded as one of the richest golfers of all time. Player won nine major titles on the normal circuit and nine major championships on the Champions Tour during the course of his career. Player won the 1965 U.S. Open at the age of 29. Open, and became the first non-American to win all four majors in a single career, a feat known as a career Grand Slam. He was the youngest player to accomplish it at the time, however Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods later surpassed him.
Through his Player Design organization, he is also a renowned golf course architect with more than 400 design projects on five continents across the world. He is known as the Black Knight, Mr. Fitness, and the International Ambassador of Golf. In addition, he has published or co-authored 36 books on golf instruction, design, philosophy, motivation, and fitness.
The Player Foundation is run by The Player Group, with the primary goal of improving impoverished education across the world. The Blair Atholl Schools in Johannesburg, South Africa, were founded by The Player Foundation in 1983 and now serve over 500 kids in kindergarten through eighth grade. It celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2013 with charity golf events in London, Palm Beach, Shanghai, and Cape Town, raising more than US$60 million in total.
