The game, like its predecessor, is a third-person shooter. The player has three weapon slots and may equip one light weapon and two heavy weapons. The player may also employ explosives like grenades and melee weapons like the Lancer Assault Rifle, a mid-range assault rifle with a fully operable chainsaw for a bayonet. The surroundings can also be used to the player's benefit. In addition to various sequential situations, the game has several hub areas that may be explored freely on foot or with the Skiff, a vehicle.

The player may perform different side tasks in the game, and as they explore the game's landscape, they will find trinkets and vital components needed to improve Jack, a robot who will accompany Kait throughout the game. New abilities, such as detecting foes, concealing Kait and her team, stunning enemies, and deflecting bullets with an energy shield, will be available through improving Jack.
