Go Snowmobiling in West Yellowstone, Montana, US

In the state of Montana, there are more than 6,000 kilometers of snowmobile trails that have been groomed, and a sizable portion of those trails are found inside Yellowstone National Park. The park, which spans Wyoming, Idaho, and Montana, is accessible from the town of West Yellowstone.

Guided snowmobile tours, most of which depart from West Yellowstone, are the only way to explore the park during the winter when thick layers of snow cover the roads and regular road traffic is banned. Every year, Yellowstone receives more than 380 cm of snow, which turns the backcountry roads, powdery meadows, and mountain paths into a winter wonderland. The national forest guide service offers guided trips for those looking to go far into the backcountry or for novice snowmobilers, but it's also possible to just rent a snowmobile and go exploring on your own.
