Grand Case Festival
The Grand Case Festival, held on Victor Schoelcher Day, honors the abolitionist and congressman who led the campaign against slavery. This is the most famous festival in Sint Maarten, which takes place every July 21 and sees families come together to commemorate the abolition of slavery. Slavery was officially abolished in 1833, and the events that preceded and since have had a tremendous influence on the history and cultural formation of this Caribbean society. This most famous festival includes religious and military ceremonies, canoes, boats and bicycles, and traditional games along with musical entertainment.
The Grand Case Festival is the most famous festival in Sint Maarten that allows everyone to simultaneously explore local cuisine and craft, all mixed with wild Caribbean music. Sint Maarten becomes a pedestrian street from 6 pm to 10 pm so visitors and residents can tour the stands and sample local products, and watch Carnival dancers parade through the streets.
