Great War Island
Great War Island is a river island located in Belgrade, Serbia's capital. It is situated near the confluence of the rivers Sava and Danube. The island is part of Belgrade City proper and belongs to the city municipality of Zemun, despite the fact that it is deserted.
The island is relatively close to the banks, being only 200 meters (660 feet) from both New Belgrade and Kalemegdan at their closest points. The fragment of Little War Island lies halfway between Great War Island and Ue in the south.
The Great War Island is roughly triangular, with a total size of 2.11 km2 (0.81 sq mi). It's low, mostly marshland, and frequently inundated by the Danube. The Veliki Galija Canal is the island's most prominent physical feature. It's a relic of the canal where sediments built the first barrier island, which later merged into one. The canal was eventually closed off from the Danube and effectively turned into a lake, covering 0.24 km2 (0.09 sq mi) and serving as the island's primary natural bird and fish spawning place. Mali Galija, a tiny marsh nearby, served as an ideal natural spawning place. During drought years, however, the lake fully disappears, inflicting damage to the closed ecosystem that surrounds it. Veliki Galija was eventually restored, but Mali Galija had become fully overgrown. Currently, two-thirds of the island is used as a wildlife reserve for 196 bird species, many of which are threatened with extinction. Lido, one of Belgrade's beaches, is located on the island's northern point. According to everyone, it is considered one of the most beautiful islands in Serbia.
